The Vampire Diaries: Memorial Recap/Review

Before we start this recap, can we have a round of applause for such an intense, heartfelt, beautiful, amazing, suspenseful episode of this brilliant show named The Vampire Diaries? Seriously, 'Memorial' was such a great episode, it had everything that I could wish for from this show. The episode started with cross-cutting between Elena's first animal feed and a conversation between Damon and Stefan, in which Damon says that Elena should feed on a human before an animal. Of course Elena has already fed on that guard dude from last episode but that didn't count because that was part of her transition. However, Elena and Stefan decide to have sexy time in the woods, sorta like Caroline and Klaus/Tyler in the previous episode. But when Elena does take her first feed, she ends up throwing up the blood, which isn't good and kinda gross. I really like Elena's storyline because it feels like we're going through the whole adjustment process with her.

We then meet the new big bad in town who is Connor, the vampire hunter. He's investigating the cabin that the freaky pastor decided to burn down. As he's doing this, he finds a letter for the pastor's daughter, April. Cut to the Mystic Grill, where Liz is accusing Damon of lighting the cabin on fire. Damon tells her that if he were to kill the council then he would own up to it. By the way, is Liz sheriff again? I guess no-one needs to know that the council ran her out of the sheriff's office last episode. Then Connor shows up and asks to speak with Liz in private. We then catch up with Matt and Jeremy who are helping set up with the memorial, which is to honor all the victims of that nasty fire. This is when April shows up and at first she kinda reminds me of Anna. I liked Anna and Jeremy so I'm hoping for a April/Jeremy love connection down the line. Although, April doesn't seem very sad about the passing of her father. I mean, NBD it was just your father, could have been worse. Meanwhile, Stefan pushes Elena to celebrate her first feed. Weird thing to celebrate, don't you think? Damon then calls to tell Stefan that Liz has been accusing him of all kinds of crazy stuff so Elena rushes over to repetitively ask him if he did it. But Elena has ulterior motives; she actually goes to Damon because she needs help with feeding so he tells her to feed from him, which she does. Don't tell Stefan though. While that's happening, Caroline and Tyler are having sex when Connor comes knocking. Maybe he's just there for a friendly visit. Just kidding, Connor shoots Tyler but he gets away so it's all good.

To get the wooden bullets out, Tyler goes to see Doctor Stefan, who finds witch like markings on the bullets. At the church, Elena and Matt help set up for the memorial when Elena spots April and so she decides to go over and give April some helpful words of encouragement. All is really sad and going well until Elena touches April's veins and then Elena starts to feel sick again. This time it's especially sad because Elena is wearing a really pretty dress and she just throws blood up all over it so Elena has to call Damon for a replacement dress. This is why vampires can't have nice things. Anyway, Doctor Stefan makes a house call to Bonnie, who is still really sad about seeing Grams die all over again. Bonnie and Stefan have a nice talk about Bonnie's feelings but Stefan is here for answers so he starts questioning Bonnie about the bullets. Bonnie tells Stefan that the markings aren't magical, a dead end for Stefan. Back at the church, Connor stands outside the bathroom door while Elena waits for Damon to bring her the dress (this dress is more funeral appropriate cause it's black so good choice Damon!). Damon can handle Connor though, he spots Connor's vervain glove and doesn't shake his hand as a result. Connor is seriously so scary, I can't deal with this character. And poor April, she was just sitting there thinking about her dead father and then out pops Connor to shove a stake in her. April isn't even a vampire! What is he doing!? I was beginning to like her!

Afterwards, Damon gives Elena some blood in a bag to drink so she can regain strength but this doesn't help very much either. Damon then fills Stefan in on Elena's problem with blood, Stefan has been in the dark thus far. Also, Damon lets it slip that Elena drank from him. I thought we agreed on not telling Stefan? But truly does any of this matter when the most intense scene of Vampire Diaries history is about to happen? No, I don't think so. Inside the church, everyone takes their seats and gets ready for the service but when April doesn't show up to say her speech, Elena goes to say a speech instead. While everything is going on below, Connor is watching and ready to shoot from above. Everyone is worried that Connor is gonna show up but it's okay cause Caroline says "if he shows his face, I'm gonna kick his ass," seriously funny line. Another funny line is when Stefan tells Damon to bite him. Elena and the rest of the crew hear April's blood dripping into the holy water and Damon says "nobody move," I don't know why I thought this was so funny, it just was. But, Stefan has to go get Elena cause the blood is making her loose control again. To help Elena, Matt allows her to drink from him, everyone (who isn't a supernatural creature) thinks that Elena is just sad so Matt says that when she drinks from him, it will just look like she's crying. Meanwhile, Tyler gives a speech about the pastor and it's a very nice speech until Connor shoots him. How rude. He is a dastardly person, absolutely immoral.

Anywho, Tyler's fine, he's a hybrid. So Damon goes after Connor but Connor means business and he gets away. Elena goes to help April but she is covered in blood and the blood lust is too strong until Caroline comes and helps Elena take control of the situation. I loved that Caroline was pushing Elena and telling her that she can do it. April is the first person to be compelled by Elena, which is nice because Elena compelled April to make her feel better. At the Mystic Grill, Matt and Jeremy run into Connor and it seems that Jeremy can now see ghost tattoos as he sees a tattoo on Connor that Matt doesn't. What does this mean? Is Jeremy destined to be a vampire hunter too? We'll have to wait and see...

We then meet up with Elena and Stefan at the Salvatore residence. Stefan is pissed that Elena didn't tell him that she was having problems with blood but Elena is also pissed because her life is a "never ending funeral." I loved it when Elena said that because she has been through so much and this helps Stefan to see that Elena is still grieving for everyone she loves but she's also grieving for her former self. So to help Elena, Stefan calls the gang together to have their own kind of memorial where they let off Japanese lanterns. This was my favorite scene of the whole episode, I loved it and it was so beautiful. Damon doesn't feel like he wants to do this though so he goes to Alaric's grave instead, I thought this was so sad and nice to have Damon talk to Alaric cause they were like best friends. Then Alaric's ghost appears and normally when ghosts appear on The Vampire Diaries it's to give information or they're a threat or whatever but this time it was just like a nice goodbye. The same goes for the episode, normally the episodes end on cliffhangers but this time was different. I really enjoyed this episode so much, it's probably the best episode of a TV show that I've watched in a while. Can't wait for next week!

Overall episode score:-
Memorial = A+
