'Gossip Girl' is now officially half-way through it's final season and there really haven't been many jaw-dropping, 'OMG' moments. Although, 'Monstrous Ball' was a fun episode that I really enjoyed watching. This whole episode revolved around the annual debutante ball, like the gang's ball from season 1 and then Jenny's in season 3. Blair is trying to get Waldorf Designs a good name again but all her designs thus far are too uptight, according to Dan; he informs her that she should have a more shocking approach. I love that the Dan/Blair friendship is back. Georgina then arrives to discuss business things. Serena and Steven are having a lovely morning, enjoying breakfast until Sage comes in with her dress. Sage is so annoying I can't handle her any longer. Serena wasn't invited to the ball but then Steven invites her last minute when the subject is brought up. Back with Georgina and Dan, Georgina is trying to get the next chapter out of him (which is the Blair chapter) but he tells her that it's not ready yet so Georgina gives him until noon to hand it in. Georgina is my soul sister, I love her that much. When Georgina leaves, Dorota comes rushing in with Blair's engagement ring and asks Dan if he's seen her as she has forgotten it. Considering this, Dan calls for his chapter to be picked up but he hands in a chapter about Chuck instead of Blair. Meanwhile, Ivy is still trying to find dirt on Lily and we find out that Rufus is having problems at his gallery. What is Ivy still doing here? Speaking of unnecessary characters, Nate and Chuck talk about Bart and then Serena has a chat with Nate about Steven. Serena and Steven's relationship bores me at this point. Chuck catches up with Lily on the streets of New York, Chuck tries to get Lily to help him get proof on Bart but Lily just wants a family. While Lily and Chuck talk, Ivy is spying on them in a nearby cab, when I saw her I couldn't stop laughing because she's so desperate. She asks Chuck if she can help him but he just walks away, which I thought was hilarious. Blair then meets up with Sage on the streets, Blair tries to get Sage to wear one of her designs to the ball but Sage tells Blair she ain't wearing Waldorf Designs. How dare Sage talk to Blair the way she did, that is enough Sage! Serena then thinks it's a good idea to snoop through Steven's things but she finds an engagement ring which Sage also stumbles upon. Isn't Serena's relationship with Steven still too early for a proposal though?
Chuck and Ivy decide to team up to take down Bart, Ivy wants to help because it will cause strain in Lily in Bart's marriage if Bart finds out that Chuck and Lily were talking behind his back. I hope that Ivy becomes a pleasurable villain like Georgina but that's a long shot. Sage then questions Steven about the ring and he confirms his intentions to propose, he says that all he has to do is ask Lily's permission and it's a done deal. At Waldorf Designs, Blair is onto Plan B, which is to have Jessica dress up and pretend that she's a debutante. Dan comes over to deliver coffee and Jessica spills the beans (the theoretical beans) on Dan's new chapter about Chuck. Blair's response to this is "go, pack your things!" which made me laugh because she has now thrown both Serena and Dan out of her house, she's throwing everyone out. Dan and Jessica convince Blair that Dan only wrote Chuck in the best light. Moving along, Lily and Serena meet for tea and discuss the pending engagement, Lily is the voice of reason but she tells Serena that she'll do whatever she wants anyway. Back with Blair, Sage comes to hatch a scheme with Blair. Sage wants to stop Serena from marrying Steven and if Blair helps then she will wear Blair's dress at the ball. Blair should not be teaming up with such an ungrateful brat but she does, sigh. Whereas Chuck's plan is underway, Ivy has planted leads to make Bart believe that Chuck was at the apartment to talk with Lily. However, Bart arrives before Ivy can leave.
Blair calls Lily to convince her that the proposal is a bad idea. But back with Ivy, she tells Bart that she is the maid's daughter and she's just here to clean. Bart buys the whole story and thinks that Chuck has been to see Lily, well that worked out nicely. The ball is then about to begin, Chuck isn't going because he is doing something or something so Dan escorts Blair instead. There was this really nice look that Blair gave Dan and he returned, oh my Dair heart! Gossip Girl Blast: Steven is spotted leaving Harry Winston empty handed. Does this spell bad news for Serena? She seems to think so as she also got a text from Steven to say that there was a change of plans and she shouldn't come to the ball. Woops.
At the ball, Georgina tries to pressure Dan into giving her the Blair chapter. Georgina thinks that Dan is letting his feelings for Blair get in the way again. She uses the Serena/Dan sex tape as leverage and she gives Dan until midnight to give her the chapter but Sage over hears and she steals Georgina's phone by bumping into her. NO-ONE BUMPS INTO GEORGINA! How dare Sage man handle Georgina like that!? In an unexpected turn of events, Chuck comes to the ball but not as Blair's date, he's just trying to stir the Bart/Lily pot even more. Although, Serena finds Lily first and she starts yelling at her because Lily didn't give her blessing to Steven. I like Serena's hair but everyone needs to back off Lily. That little bitch Sage then talks to Blair about the plan, Sage was the one that sent the text from Steven's phone and she had Steven take her ring to Harry Winston to get re-sized, Sage then tells Blair that her plan sucked because Serena showed up at the ball anyway. Blair's plan does NOT suck! Blair and Georgina need to team up and take Sage down! Bart then finds Lily and tells her about what happened earlier but Lily tells him that the maid's daughter is four to which they discover it was Ivy in the apartment. Chuck joins in the fun when he tries to get Lily on his side but she isn't hearing it. Blair goes to talk to Serena about the plan, she tells Serena that she was on her side all along and that she was just keeping Sage at bay until Sage wore Blair's dress. She then tells Serena the truth, that Steven has no idea what's going on and he still intends to propose. The two finally make up, I'm happy that they're friends again but that was fast. It's then time for Sage to make her debut, which she pairs with the release of Serena and Dan's sex tape. Blair is so mad that she slaps Dan, I couldn't stop laughing when she did that, everyone loves to slap Dan.
Steven is so angry at Serena about the sex tape but I don't really see why, it's got nothing to do with him. Meanwhile Dan and Blair argue about who's to blame but if you ask me, they're both to blame. Sad Dair times. Georgina retrieves her phone from Sage and Georgina says that if Sage ever needs employment then she must call her, this was really funny to me but I wanted Georgina to slap the bitch. Nate is angry when he finds out that Sage rigged the sex tape to go off so he storms off. In Brooklyn, Rufus' gallery thing got sorted out with the help of an anonymous donator. Rufus wants to send an invitation to the gallery opening to this person and he finds out that it was Ivy. Back at the ball, Blair is mad at Serena about the whole thing, she is rightfully mad but she and Dan were broken up like Serena said.
Serena and Steven then break up (yay!) so she goes out with Dan to get some food. I wish that Dan and Serena stayed friends after the first time they broke up, instead of all this weird drama. Blair goes to see Chuck because she's hurt after the whole night but Dorota sends her a text summoning her home. Bart tells Lily all his secrets and he shows her a mysterious letter. Ivy tells Chuck that she saw this letter but she didn't see what's inside. Dorota tells Blair that Jean-Pierre has many buyers lined up for the dress but Eleanor isn't happy with the new direction of the company and she's coming home to fix the disaster. The episode ends with a nice scene between Serena and Dan in which Serena gives Dan attitude about his boxers. An enjoyable episode which is sustaining the quality of this season but isn't bringing anything new or big into it.
