Every now and then 'Pretty Little Liars' has to have more quiet episode to let things simmer before they boil over again. That's exactly what this week's episode, 'Out of the Frying Pan, Into the Inferno' was set up to do. We begin with Spencer who is still reeling from discovering that Toby is part of the 'A' Team. The episode actually starts with a dream Spencer is having in which she gets very close with Toby but then he becomes the dark figure we know as 'A'. It's a pretty creepy opening. Then, Spencer wakes up to be reminded that she's living the nightmare and that she has a key belonging to 'A'.
On the phone, Aria and Emily talk about what to do with their new information on the whereabouts of Melissa on the night of Alison's murder. Why are the girls so quick to jump on Melissa? They flip from suspect to suspect quicker than it takes to flip a page. Then Emily's mom, Pam, gives her a package from Nate/James' parents. Inside is a lot of cards that Emily made for Alison and a biology book. Apparently, Maya had found these items but somehow Nate/James had gotta a hold of them. At Hanna's house, Caleb doesn't want to meet up with her anytime soon so she begins to get suspicious. Then Ashly enters to get herself some wine (I feel like Ashley always has a glass of wine in her hands) and grill Hanna about what's going on with Mona and Caleb. Ashley is not stupid, she knows that things are happening. Over at Aria's house, Byron tells her that Meredith forgot to take her crazy pills lately and that's why she had that psychotic break. He also tells her that he feels like he has failed because all he wanted was for Aria to never get hurt. The next day, Aria, Hanna and Spencer walk to the Rear Window Brew together before school. Spencer is out of it though, she hasn't even told anyone about Toby. However, Aria doesn't shut up about wanting to tell Ezra about his child. Spencer then cuts out early because she has 'reading to catch up on', sure... The two remaining girls meet Emily at the Brew so they can see all the old Ali stuff she found. Inside the biology book, Hanna finds a conversation written by Alison and another person that isn't one of the Liars. The conversation talks about both Toby and someone referred to as 'The Beach Hottie'.
At school, Aria calls Ezra to schedule a meet up so she can finally tell him about his son. Then Hanna hears Paige talking on the phone to Caleb about how he put the cow brain in Mona's locker. GASP! So it was Caleb! In the girl's bathroom, Emily gives Spencer the biology book but Spencer doesn't want that and she goes into a rant about why they're still loyal to Alison. She made some good points because Ali was such a bitch. But Emily makes her read the book anyway because there's something in it about Toby. Through flashback we learn what Ali wrote: While Toby was in juvie, Alison went to visit him. She had been getting notes from 'A' and Ali thought that they must have come from Toby because Jenna was going through surgery when some of these notes were sent. But Toby tells her that he has nothing to do with it and he wishes that he knew 'A' so he could 'offer his services'. Back in the present: Spencer begins to cry so she tells Emily that Toby broke up with her but she doesn't tell her about the 'A' Team thing and asks Emily to keep it between themselves. After this, Spencer gets a text from Aria to say that Ezra freaked out once he found out about his son and he broke up with her. Additionally, Aria asks Spencer to meet her the park. Spencer is so annoyed at this point so she storms out of class while Ella fails in trying to stop her.
Spencer finds Ezra at the park but she soon realizes that he and Aria haven't actually talked yet so she has spilled the beans. At the Rosewood Police Station, Pam has started working there and shes still been worried about Emily. While talking to a co-worker, Officer Wilden overhears her and tells her that if Emily gets any more mail from Nate/James' parents then the police should run interference. Although, Emily is still trying to find answers about the biology book. She discovers a photo of Alison and Cece. At lunch, Ezra finds Aria at school to yell at her about the situation. When he leaves, Aria gets a text from 'A' that says: "Thought you needed a little push, so I pushed 'send' for you. -A".
Officer Wilden tells Pam that he went through a similar tragedy as Emily and he still hasn't gotten over it. That's great Wilden, thanks for sharing. At Spencer's house, Aria comes over to talk about the Ezra thing. Aria says that it isn't Spencer's fault, which it isn't. But Spencer is actually sticking up for 'A'. Both girls leave the conversation pissed. P.S. I thought Spencer seemed kinda suicidal in this scene. Elsewhere, Emily tries to get answers from Cece about 'The Beach Hottie'. But she tells Emily that she has no idea who 'The Beach Hottie' is. We find out what Cece does know in flashback: Cece was on a trip with Ali's family during Summer she went missing. 'The Beach Hottie' and Ali were hooking up and one night Ali comes to talk to Cece because she feels that she might be pregnant. Meaning that Alison could have been pregnant at the time she was murdered. In the present: Hanna follows Paige to a lesbian bar because she thought Caleb was supposed to meet Paige. However, it turns out Paige was meeting another girl. I didn't realize at first but isn't that the girl who worked at the Halloween store in the 'Pretty Little Liars' web series, 'Pretty Dirty Secrets'? At Spencer's house, she texts someone about a meetup.
Emily tells Aria all the new information about Alison's murder and she also tells Aria that it's very plausible that Ali could have been pregnant. This information is too big to sit on so Emily decides to take it to the police station. At the lesbian bar, Hanna tries to avoid Paige while ducking thrown drinks. Unfortunately, Hanna gets carded and busted for underage drinking. Later, Emily and Hanna meet each other at the police station saying as Hanna has been turned in anyway. Hanna tells her about getting busted but keeps Paige's date and her alliance with Caleb a secret. Emily's biology book lands in the hands of Wilden which they find out is a bad thing because he was at the lake where Ali's family was on a trip. So Wilden could have been Ali's baby daddy. Meanwhile, Spencer arrives at her meetup but it's not with Toby. Instead it's with a private investigator, Spencer gives him the 'A' key and a photo of Toby. Now go to work dude and get us answers! In the last scene of the episode, we see Ezra packing up his car. He tells Aria that he doesn't blame her anymore but he has to go to Maggie and his son for a while. Then he starts to cry. You guys, is Ezra leaving Aria? This was a more slow paced episode of 'Pretty Little Liars' but I think they needed it so they could address a lot of stuff. I'm really looking forward to next week's episode though, it seems to be so twisty!
