The Carrie Diaries: Read Before Use Recap/Review

Some things get better with time and 'The Carrie Diaries' proved that with this week's episode, 'Read Before Use'. Carrie starts off the episode with a voice-over about labels which is the theme of this week. I really loved this opening, especially because 'Head over Heels' by The Go-Go's was playing. After this, the girls talk about how Carrie's dad won't allow her to see Sebastian. This then turns into a discussion of whether Maggie is a 'Drama Queen' or not when they begin to talk about her and Walt's break-up. In New York, Carrie talks to Larissa about dating a bad boy. Larissa tells her that good guys are no fun, that is awful advice, Larissa.

Tom is left to do the family shopping, which means picking up tampons for Carrie. While trying to pick the right kind, he asks a lady for some help. This is the first time we see the Bradshaw dad as a human being because there's an obvious flirtation going on with this lady. However, Tom isn't quite ready for that yet so he discards the lady's number. A flirtation that is received is what's happening between Carrie and Sebastian outside school. The pair bond and get close over Sebastian's rad taste in music. When Carrie gets home, her dad gives her the lady products that he picked up for her in a truly awkward moment. Also, Carrie learns that Sebastian was one of her dad's clients (because he's a lawyer, did we know that?) Then Dorrit comes in and gets real ungrateful because Tom picked up the wrong kind of pizza. Gosh Dorrit! He tried his best! But she gets angry about the whole pizza situation so she goes to chill at the pet store where she meets a friendly hamster. Later that night, Carrie dives into her father's files to find out why he won't allow her to see Sebastian.

At a diner, Carrie tells Maggie and The Mouse that Sebastian got kicked out of his last school because he had 'intimate relations' with a teacher. Meaning: the dude got laid by his art history teacher. The girls talk about if Carrie should keep seeing him or not and then The Mouse talks about a date she's going to have with her boyfriend (Seth) in New York. When Maggie and Carrie tell The Mouse that her plans are cute/lame, she begins to rethink things. Loved this scene, it was very 'Sex and the City' because of the girls talking at the diner. Then The Mouse gets some help from Maggie about what to wear but everything Maggie owns is too big so they call Carrie for help. She has just the right dress for The Mouse but it's missing from her wardrobe so Dorrit must have stolen it. While searching for the missing dress, Carrie finds a hamster instead. Dorrit confesses to Carrie that she stole the hamster (she named it Morrissey) and wants to keep it. Carrie tells her that the hamster needs to be looked after properly so she's going to inform Tom about the visitor. However, Dorrit says that if Carrie spills then she'll squeal about Carrie's date with Sebastian. Carrie lets Dorrit keep the hamster so she can keep the date with Sebastian. They meet at the park where they listen to some totally tubular music and then make out. When Carrie asks where Sebastian learned to kiss so good, he replies "I had a good teacher." ABORT MISSION!

Carrie runs all the way to New York (she changes her clothes first though) so she can have some girl talk with The Mouse concerning the Sebastian situation and then sneak The Mouse into a trendy New York club with the help of Larissa. Things are kinda awkward between The Mouse and Seth so they're hoping that the club, 'The Furnace' will heat things up (puns!) But this club is more of an art exhibition with a performing art piece. This piece is a legendary porn star (Monica Penny) showing her piece to the public for a penny. Basically you throw a penny in the jar and this lady opens her vagina to you. Back in Castlebury, Dorrit learns that Morrissey is missing and Maggie gets crazy with a stuffed bear that Walt won for her. This bear is a symbol of Maggie and Walt's relationship so she loses her shit and rips open the poor bear. Meanwhile, Tom is having a night on the town with an old friend (Mr. Medina from 'Gilmore Girls'!) who just so happens to be the guy who gave Carrie her internship at the law firm. At 'The Furnace', Larissa shoves The Mouse forward with a penny but she shouts "I don't wanna see her vagina. -But I'm sure it's very nice," and then she runs away. I thought this moment was so funny. Then Larissa pushes Carrie forward.

Carrie drops the penny in the jar and gets an eyeful but she smiles at Monica who then invites Carrie on stage. Monica tells her that she sees a lot of herself in Carrie which leads to Monica inviting Carrie to show her vagina. You show off what the good Lord gave you, gurl! Cut to Tom who is bombing on the dating scene, expect when he mentions that his wife died. Tom's friend says that this is a great way to pick up women but Tom doesn't wanna use his dead wife to land a date. At the Bradshaw residence, Dorrit pathetically searches the house for Morrissey and then Maggie shows up looking for Carrie to help her fix the bear she murdered. In a comical scene, Dorrit offers to help instead and in return, Maggie helps look for the lost hamster. Outside 'The Furnace', Seth tells The Mouse that he likes her just the way she is, dork and all. Inside, the crowd is shouting for Carrie to show herself but she runs off stage instead. I would do the same. Larissa tells her that she's disappointed because she thought Carrie was gonna get a name for herself and get her picture on the side of bus (loved this nod to 'Sex and the City'). But Carrie tells Larissa that she said 'no' because she's owning her power and isn't that the point of Monica's exhibit? Larissa agrees and makes lunch plans with Carrie for next week.

Carrie arrives home to find a very badly stitched up bear and Maggie. But Mags leaves in a hurry and Dorrit goes off to find Morrissey. In the city, Seth and The Mouse officially get back in a relationship. At home, Carrie tells her dad that she knows about Sebastian's affair with the teacher because she read Tom's files but she decides that she's gonna see Sebastian because it's her choice like not showing her vagina. However, Tom gets really angry with her for reading his files.

Tom finds the missing hamster and returns it to Dorrit who says that she's taking the hamster back to the store because it was stupid of their mom to trust her. When Tom hears about his wife's approval of the hamster, he gives in and allows Dorrit to keep it. At the park, Carrie tells Sebastian that she knows about him and the teacher and she's fine with it. He isn't though as he tells her that he had no idea that her father was his lawyer. He then gets angry with her for over analyzing everything and reading the file. Their relationship is over before it really started so Carrie must move on. Ugh, Sebastian is buggin, big time. But Carrie's dad forgives her when they shop for hamster supplies. That doesn't take away Carrie's heartbreak though. This is a fantastic episode, the only problem I have is that there was no Walt this week. But that's okay because next week's episode looks pretty Walt heavy.

Overall episode score:-
'Read Before Use' = A+
