Glee: Dynamic Duets Recap/Review

'Glee' took on the theme of superheroes this week with 'Dynamic Duets'. The only other Teen Drama that has done a superhero episode is 'One Tree Hill' in season 8 with the episode 'Holding Out for a Hero'. It's an odd theme to have running through-out an episode and I think that 'Glee' did an okay job with it. This won't go down as one of my all time favorite 'Glee' episodes but it was better than 'The Role You Were Born to Play'. The reason I mention this episode is because it didn't feature Lea Michele either and I just don't think you can have an episode of 'Glee' without Rachel Berry, she's what I tune in for and her storylines are the best in the show right now. So we begin this episode with a meeting of The Secret Society of Superheroes Club, which is a club dedicated to protecting the hallways of McKinley, much like Santana's Bully Whips Program. We get a rundown of everyone's superpowers and Sugar's is my favorite, her superpower is money. Then we find out that the Glee club's trophy has been stolen with a message left by a student from the Dalton Academy so it's up to this weirdo club of superheroes to save the day.

The love triangle between Marley, Ryder and Jake develops when Jake and Ryder start beating each other up. Not enjoying this love triangle because I don't really care, I just want Rachel Berry. In the first Glee club meeting to be run by Finn, he tries to brainstorm ideas for Sectionals but his ideas suck. Also, Finn has started to dress like Mr. Schuester, it's really weird. I actually keep thinking that Finn is Mr. Schue like when he was talking to Coach Beiste, who convinces Finn to dress up as a superhero like everyone else. Blaine goes to Dalton Academy to get the trophy back, while there he runs into Sebastian. A nice surprise because I didn't expect to see Sebastian again. Blaine thinks that Sebastian has stolen the trophy but there's a new guy in charge of The Warblers named Hunter who tries to lure Blaine back to The Warblers. Blaine then performs 'Dark Side', I like the song but I just didn't like the performance.

Finn dresses up like Coach Beiste told him to and he pairs the Glee club up for duets, he puts Ryder with Jake and Marley with Kitty because that seems like a good idea. Kitty basically takes control of their whole duet. Ryder and Jake aren't even getting along and they sing 'Superman' which is a fine performance that ends in a brawl. Finn breaks it up but he really has no idea what he's doing. However, he punishes Ryder and Jake by having them tell each other their biggest weaknesses. Later, Blaine comes to tell Finn that he's thinking of returning to The Warblers because everything at McKinley reminds him of Kurt. I'm still 100% Team Kurt.

Marley feels uncomfortable about wearing a body suit for her duet with Kitty, she also admits that she is still making herself throw up. I thought Marley stopped when Ryder found her in the bathroom last episode, poor misguided Marley. In the guys' locker room, Jake and Ryder come clean about their biggest insecurities. Jake tells Ryder that he hates it when people make fun of him for being half black and half Jew. He writes all this down in a note to give to Ryder but Ryder doesn't accept it as he wants Jake to tell him instead of having to read it. We then find out that Ryder can't read. I hate when all the focus is on minor characters but I felt really bad for Ryder. In the girls' bathroom, Kitty and Marley get ready for their performance and Kitty actually makes Marley feel good about herself. They sing 'Holding Out for a Hero' (not to be confused with the 'One Tree Hill' episode of the same name), this is a more enjoyable performance than the others so far in this episode. After this, Brittany spots Blaine's empty space in the choir room and the truth comes out about Blaine wanting to transfer.

Jake tells Finn about Ryder not being able to read so Finn takes Ryder to get tested and it turns out that Ryder is dyslexic. I'm not an expert on dyslexic however I do know a bit about it and I just find it odd that Ryder went so long without knowing he was dyslexic. I don't know if that actually happens but it seemed weird to me. Ryder and Finn talk about this for a while and have a heart to heart and Ryder now feels better about everything. Also, Jake is now his homie for kinda helping him discover that he is dyslexic.

This comes in handy for Jake as he almost gets in a fight for standing up for Marley's mom but Ryder backs him up. To get some advice on Marley and the whole love triangle situation, Jake calls his half-brother, Puck. I had no idea that Puck was gonna be here so it was nice to see him. By the way, does Puck remind anyone else of The Situation or is that just me? I'm not sure what Puck's advice was but I'm sure it was helpful. Blaine is clearing out his locker on the other side of the hall. Sam is actually helpful by giving Blaine advice and trying to convince him to stay at McKinley. During Blaine and Sam's discussion, we see a flashback to the night Blaine cheated on Kurt, it made me really mad at Blaine but then in the present he felt so bad about it. His excuses were stupid though but I'm now 99.9% Team Kurt because Blaine feels bad. Sam starts singing 'Heroes' to further convince Blaine and he then joins in. I love the song and performance but the montage they showed was really cheesy. Blaine decides to stay with the New Directions, then he and Sam steal back the trophy.

Ryder tells Marley that he can't go out Friday because he wants to study with his new teacher, he then tells her that they will go out next Friday. Although Marley was ready for going out this Friday so she asks Jake to go out with her. I really liked Marley until now, Kitty has corrupted her, there's still time Marley, run away! The gang then celebrates the return of the trophy to the choir room and they talk about Sectionals, I keep forgetting that it's Sectionals and Thanksgiving next week on 'Glee'. The group then close the episode with 'Some Nights', I love this song and the performance was good. I'm hoping for a much better episode of 'Glee' next week, it's just no good without Lea Michele and I don't like when they put too much focus on secondary characters. Saying that, this wasn't a bad filler episode.

'Holding Out for a Hero' performed by Kitty and Marley = A-
