The Vampire Diaries: The Five Recap/Review

Happy belated Halloween from The Vampire Diaries! 'The Five' attempted to be a Halloween themed episode without actually being set in Halloween, like 'One Tree Hill' 304. This is due to The Vampire Diaries' tricky timeline, which should now be in the second half of the gang's senior year of high school. So was this episode a trick or a treat? I would defiantly say a treat, as we learned more about The Brotherhood of the Five and Elena experimented with her vampirism. The episode started with a brief flashback to when the five was created by a witch. Back in present day, we learn that Damon is going on a trip with Elena and Bonnie to a college campus so Bonnie can meet the man (Professor Shane) who now teaches Grams' classes. Did we know that Grams used to teach at a college? Stefan isn't to happy about this, when he questions Elena she says that she can't drink animal blood or blood from a bag, it has to be from the vein. Elena thinks that this is some kind of doppelganger curse, but does Katherine also suffer from this? Stefan gives Elena the okay on her trip with Damon, but he tells her to be careful because he doesn't want her getting caught up in the feed. Over at the Mystic Grill, Rebekah gives Matt the keys to a new truck, in hopes that he will forgive her. Although, he doesn't and Klaus laughs in her face. Also in this scene, Klaus tells Rebekah that The Brotherhood of the Five still exists. At the campus, Elena confesses to Bonnie that she doesn't think college will be in her future anymore. I hope that the gang do go to college next season but it would be kind of weird at the same time because I'm sure that not everyone will be attending. Bonnie, Damon and Elena sneak into Professor Shane's class but all Damon and Elena talk about is what kind of vampire she is, very rude. Klaus is also being rude, he has Connor all chained up, that is no way to treat a guest. Stefan comes to visit Klaus so he can learn more about The Five and he tells Klaus that Connor can't be compelled. In a flashback to 1114 Italy, we learn that Rebekah dated a member of The Five and that they were very dangerous. It turns out that Connor is the first member Klaus has found since then. In order for Stefan to find out more, he has to bring Rebekah to Klaus for a family dinner.

Back at the Grill, April waits for Rebekah to arrive, when she does Matt tells her that he's keeping the truck. I found that really funny. Stefan then comes to ask Rebekah to the dinner. Meanwhile, Damon tries to teach Elena to feed on unsuspecting college students but Elena's humanity forces it's way in. Elena is wearing another pretty dress in this scene but thankfully she doesn't get it all blood, I was starting to think that this was gonna be a running gag. Bonnie then hands Elena a flyer for a frat party, Damon thinks that this will be the perfect opportunity for Elena to practice her feeding. It just so happens that this party is a costume party (this is where the Halloween theme comes in). However lets not get ahead of ourselves. Before all the fun, Klaus holds the most awkward dinner ever but through flashback we see more about The Five. They had some "weapon" that would destroy all vampires and the map to the weapon is tattooed onto the members' bodies. As Jeremy is the only one who can see the tattoo he must help them to find the weapon. Poor Jeremy, he looks so lost and he's always dragged into this vampire nonsense.

Damon, Elena and Bonnie arrive at the costume party and Bonnie sees Professor Shane, of all people. Although, Elena and Damon have to focus on targets, Elena goes for a guy who spikes a girl's friend. Good choice, Elena, he deserves it. But Elena is starting to scare me at the same time. Back at Klaus', Jeremy starts to draw the tattoo, remember how Jeremy used to love to draw, I forgot about that. Anyway, Connor starts to explain that members of The Five are the only ones who can see the tattoo and the more vampires they kill, the more the tattoo grows. Does this mean that Jeremy is one of The Five? At the dinner, we are treated to another flashback, some sword was the key to reading the map so the gang must also find the sword. We are also shown that the member of The Five which Rebekah dated tried to kill her and her family but because Klaus is half werewolf, he was immune to The Five's swords and he killed them. In the present, Rebekah admits that the weapon that the maps lead to is a cure for vampirism.

This means that if they find the cure then Elena doesn't have to be a vampire anymore. This is good for Elena because she wants to be human but it's also bad because if Elena becomes human again then Klaus can use her blood again to create more hybrids. Professor Shane then tells Bonnie that he's a believer in witches and he knows that Grams used to practice her magic. Bonnie tells him that she lost her magic and when she asks if he is a witch, he denies it. I'm not convinced. Back at the party, Elena is being a bad girl. She's drinking from many humans and enjoying it but when she sees Bonnie, she quickly snaps out of it. Jeremy then gives Klaus his drawing of the tattoo but Klaus is angry as the drawing isn't complete so Jeremy tells him that the tattoo spreads when Connor kills.

Outside the party Elena is very upset, as is Bonnie who starts yelling at Damon for letting Elena get out of control. Damon tells them both that he doesn't have to explain himself because he's not a ripper like Stefan. Speaking of Stefan, he calls Rebekah over to have a chat. Rebekah spills her heart out to Stefan and tells him how she loves too much and she also tells him where she burrowed her boyfriend (with his sword) who was part of The Five. But this was all a set up for Klaus to get that information and Klaus daggers Rebekah. Seriously though, can't Rebekah catch a break? I feel so sorry for her. It's not even fair. I wonder if April will notice that Rebekah is gone.

Klaus has a plane waiting to take him to Italy so he can get the sword but first he tells Stefan not to mention the cure to anyone, especially Damon or Elena. Those two return home and Elena apologizes for losing control but she also tells him that she trusts Damon when he tells her what a vampire is supposed to be but Elena doesn't want to be like Damon. That's when Stefan cock blocks them, he embraces Elena and tells her that everything is gonna be okay. Apparently it isn't though cause Connor is so angry, he breaks free from Klaus' chains. Chains will not hold Connor down! He is too angry for that. He then goes to see Professor Shane, the two are in cahoots as Professor Shane sent Connor to Mystic Falls and he has a drawing of a part of Connor's tattoo framed and on his wall. Just wow. In this show anything can happen. My hopes for future episodes are that Elena gets the cure and Rebekah gets some friends.

Overall episode score:-
'The Five' = A+
